Elian lives with his family in the impoverished farming community of Santa Ana, on the outskirts of Ayacucho. Many children here speak Quechua but are also learning to speak Spanish. A typical home is made with clay or mud bricks and stones, and covered with scraps of tin for the roof. It is challenging to grow up in a community where alcoholism, illiteracy, and domestic violence are prevalent.
